
In-Vehicle Alcohol Detection: What It Is, Where the Technology Actually Stands, and What You Can Install Today
Three different technologies get called the same thing. Here's what each one actually does, which ones exist today, and where the federal mandate really stands.
What is in-vehicle alcohol detection?
In-vehicle alcohol detection refers to technology built into or added to a vehicle that determines whether the driver has been drinking and prevents the vehicle from being driven if they have. It covers three distinct categories that are frequently confused with one another: passive sensors under federal development, court-ordered ignition interlock devices, and voluntary systems a driver installs by choice. The categories differ in who decides to use them, how the driver interacts with them, and whether they exist as shipping products or as research prototypes.
The three categories, plainly
Passive detection is still in development. These are sensors designed to measure a driver's blood alcohol concentration without any deliberate action — reading ambient breath in the cabin or taking a reading through the skin when a driver touches the start button or steering wheel. This is the approach behind the federal Driver Alcohol Detection System for Safety program. No passive system is in production in consumer vehicles today.
Court-ordered ignition interlock devices
A breath testing device is wired into the vehicle and installed under a court or DMV order following a DUI conviction. The driver blows into a tube mounted on or near the dashboard before the engine will start, and typically again at intervals while driving. Results are reported to a monitoring authority. Installation, calibration, monitoring, and removal are handled through a state-approved provider, and the driver does not choose the settings.
Voluntary prevention systems
A driver chooses to install the system on their own vehicle, with no court order, no conviction, and no reporting to any agency. The driver sets their own threshold and controls when the system is active. SOBRDRIVE is in this category.
Where the federal effort actually stands
The 2021 infrastructure law directed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to write a federal motor vehicle safety standard requiring advanced impaired driving prevention technology in new passenger vehicles. The statutory deadline for that rulemaking was November 2024. That deadline passed without a rule. In its February 2026 report to Congress, NHTSA reported that no in-vehicle technology currently in production can passively measure a driver's alcohol level at or above the legal limit, that the sensors under development are not ready for integration into vehicles sold to the public, and that existing systems have not yet demonstrated the precision, speed, and reliability the mandate requires. Traffic safety organizations responded in April 2026 that the agency had still provided no timeline for finishing the standard. As of mid-2026, the rulemaking docket remains open with no proposed rule published. The practical meaning for a driver today is simple: passive alcohol detection is a research program, not a feature you can buy.
How a voluntary system works
SOBRDRIVE is a mobile app–based DUI prevention technology that connects over Bluetooth. It has three parts: the app on the driver's phone, a handheld Bluetooth breathalyzer, and Sober On Start™, the in-vehicle drive module that governs whether the engine can be enabled. The driver sets their own BAC threshold in the app and activates the system. With Sober On Start™ active, the engine will not start until a breath sample comes back under that threshold. The driver taps to unlock the vehicle, powers on the breathalyzer, provides a sample, and, on a passing result, the app enables the engine.
What happens on a failed test
The engine stays off while accessories remain available, and the app surfaces a ride instead — rideshare options and a designated contact the driver chose in advance. There is no lockout period and no penalty. The driver can retest immediately, as many times as needed. SOBRDRIVE works with FDA-cleared breathalyzers listed on the NHTSA Conforming Products List.
Remote activation and scheduling
An account holder can turn the requirement on for any driver on the account from anywhere, and the app on that driver's phone activates within seconds. Deactivation is protected by the account holder's PIN, so a driver covered by the account cannot quietly switch it off. Scheduled activation windows are also available, so testing can be required automatically during chosen days and hours.
How voluntary systems differ from ignition interlocks
These are not the same product used under different circumstances. They are built around opposite assumptions. An ignition interlock is a consequence: it exists because a court ordered it after an arrest; it reports to an authority; it is visible in the vehicle; and its settings belong to the monitoring program rather than the driver. A voluntary system is a decision made before anything goes wrong. There is no court order, no conviction, no arrest, and no reporting to any third-party agency. It is completely private and completely voluntary. The driver sets the threshold, chooses when the system is active, and can test as many times as they need without penalty. There is no tube mounted to the dashboard and no blowing into a device in front of other people.
Who is this actually for?
An interlock serves people who have already been convicted. A voluntary system is for anyone who drinks and drives a car — someone leaving a wedding, a barbecue, a game day, a night out — who wants a hard check between the drink and the ignition. Parents adding a teen driver to an account are one use case among many, not the whole audience. Fleet operators use the same capabilities to schedule testing times and activate vehicles remotely across a fleet.
Why does the gap exist
An incentive problem underlies all of this. The ignition interlock industry is paid after an arrest. Every dollar in that market depends on a conviction having already happened. No established business model pays anyone for preventing a first offense. That is not a conspiracy; it is an incentive structure, and it explains why so much attention goes to what happens after a DUI and so little to the moment before the engine starts.
